What is Automobilista 2?

Automobilista 2 is a motorsport racing simulator game created by Reiza Studios, under the lead of Renato Simioni. The game was initially released as an Early Access title on March 31, 2020, via Steam, with the official V1.0 release taking place on June 30, 2020. Automobilista 2 features a wide variety of cars and tracks. Its main focus is on Brazilian content, which includes licensed Brazilian racing series such as Stock Car Brazil and Copa Truck. There is also an emphasis on Formula racing cars of many different eras, and includes licensed and generic vehicles. Other racing classes represented in Automobilista 2 include, but are not limited to: Retro touring cars, 1990s American open-wheel cars, GT3 and karts. Automobilista 2 supports VR, triple screen and full motion racing simulator setups. [1]

Weather

Weather Slots

  • Recommendation: 2-3 Slots at 2x (ie. 30min slots) Weather Progression
  • Default is Sync To Race (fit all slots in session) but if you're racing sprints weather may change too fast
  • So 30min slots (2x speed) gives a nice gradual progression of weather

Graphics

Aliasing, Shimmering, and Artifacting

Things we're trying to solve:

  • Concrete barriers have aliasing
  • Metal barriers have shimmering
  • Mesh fences have artifacting or "wavy" visuals

Configurations:

  • Default:
    • In-Game: Medium Multisample Anti-Aliasing (MSAA):
      • Exhibits significant aliasing, some shimmering, some artifacting
  • Best Image Quality:
    • Driver Enhanced Supersampling using NVIDIA Profile Inspector
      • In-Game: MSAA Medium
      • Driver:
        • Antialiasing - Mode: Enhance
        • Antialiasing - Setting: 8xS [Combined: 1x2 SS + 4x MS]
        • Antialiasing - Transparency Supersample: 8x Sparse Grid Supersampling

Aliased Shadows

  • This appears to be a limitation of the shadows implementation. It's trivially optimized but has to be done by the developers and comes with a performance hit.
  • No antialiasing techniques seem to have an improvement effect on Madness Engine shadows

Force Feedback

  • Custom FFB Files may be helpful for some who are looking for a little extra
  • On a SimuCube 2 Pro, with default True Drive profile, Default and Default+ in-game FFB profiles are unacceptable for the overly harsh, indecipherable vibrations delivered.
    • Steering forces are okay, but there's something else that, even now, I don't understand what it's trying to convey. It's not from FX either.
      • Notch Filter at 200hz really helps remove this

Pure Steering Rack Forces Default Custom FFB File

  • Delete Documents\Automobilista 2\ffb_custom_settings.txt and select Options > Controls > Force Feedback > Type > Custom in-game and AMS2 will default to pure steering rack forces
  • The ffb_custom_settings.txt will be automatically generated. The generated file's contents is a little more complicated than #Pure Steering Rack Forces Custom FFB File but it feels about the same. I'm now just sticking to this auto-generated one.

Pure Steering Rack Forces Custom FFB File

  • Original Post
  • User Sebj posted a super minimal, steering rack forces only custom ffb file (see below)
  • This quite literally saved AMS2 for me. Previously, I had become increasingly unhappy with the ffb compared to LMU, ACE, ACC, GTR2, etc. Neither Default, Default+, nor any Custom FFB Files I had tried up to that point helped enough.
  • I was previously running Kukus_rFuktor_Ultimate_Evo_v1.6.6.9 and pure steering rack forces was much better.

Custom FFB File:

(rack (/ arm_force M_max_force_at_rack))
(output rack)
(output (* output gain))
(histogram output)

^ That's it. Just paste it into Documents\Automobilista 2\ffb_custom_settings.txt and remove everything else in the file. Remember to select Custom FFB in-game in the Force Feedback Settings.

Settings: In-Game and SimuCube Tuner

My Original Reply:

You may have just saved AMS2 for me

I was on Kukus_rFuktor_Ultimate_Evo_v1.6.6.9 before this and was increasingly unhappy with the ffb compared to LMU, ACE, ACC, GTR2, etc. But this is brilliant. It’s just steering rack forces. I didn’t like Default or Default+ either.

There was some unintelligible forces, as well, that I was able to tune out with the notch filter somewhere around 200hz (see screenshots).

I’m also now able to reduce the Reconstruction Filter which is always a win.

Before, I was having trouble feeling like I was always on the verge of losing the backend and that meant I had a hard time catching actual oversteer or slides. Now it feels much calmer and much more natural.

So far tested on a McLaren 720S GT3 Evo (GT3 Gen 2) and a Formula Retro Gen 2.

Went back to Kukus_rFuktor_Ultimate_Evo_v1.6.6.9 with no other changes to see if it was the AMS2 or SimuCube tuner changes and while it is much quieter (having tuned out unintelligible forces before) it’s quite overdamped. I think it’s quite unnecessary to be running it when I can run the simpler custom ffb and have it just feel good right out of the box.

Areas for improvement: Tires feel a little soft, would be nice to get a stiffer feel.

Thank you!

TrackIR Head Tracking

  • Must run in VR mode (might be Steam VR only)
  • Must be in Helmet view, not just in Cockpit view. Don't worry, no visible helmet or other visual obstructions.
  • Works great other than those things
