What is Field Of View (FOV)?

Field of View (FOV) refers to the extent of the in-game world visible to the player on the screen at any given moment. It’s typically measured in degrees and represents the angle of the visible area, either horizontally, vertically, or diagonally, depending on the game’s settings. FOV is a critical setting in sim racing because it directly affects immersion, spatial awareness, and performance. [1]

Why does it matter?

  • Realism: Correct FOV mimics a real driver’s view, enhancing immersion and accurate perception of speed and distance.
  • Depth Perception: Proper FOV improves judgment of braking points, apexes, and distances to other cars.
  • Situational Awareness: Wider FOV shows more of the environment (e.g., mirrors, nearby cars), aiding competitive awareness.
  • Perceptual Impact: Incorrect FOV (too wide/narrow) can distort distances, reduce speed sensation, or cause tunnel vision.
  • Hardware Compatibility: FOV must match screen size and seating distance for single monitors, triple monitors, or VR setups.
  • Immersion vs. Comfort: Balancing realistic FOV with personal preference improves gameplay experience and comfort.

Notes

  • A mathematically correct field of view may seem too "zoomed in" but try to stick with it. If you don't like it, try somehwere in between and try to move towards the correct FOV.
